Steering Wheel Won’T Come Off

I have been following the Haynes manual, hitting the back with a mallet, the steering wheel has never been removed so asked a friend and he said that I would need a lot of brute force, I have been tugging at the wheel and shaking it whilst my helper has been tapping the centre but still has not shifted.
Any advice what to try next?

First thing put the nut back on a few turns or you will hut yourself.
you could get a puller on it. But it does depend on the wheel.
keep at it with a soft faced mallet and brute force.

I always find that rude force works best.. just try keeping the wheels straight or mark the wheel and mark the column so it goes back in right is place.

Wrap a strip of rag 1/2 inch wide around the stub and soak it in a good penetrating oil overnight. (not WD40)
As nicklouse says put the nut back on a few turns 'because when it does come off it will try to break your nose!!
Grip the wheel at 1/4 past 9 position and wobble it up and down alternate sides in the direction of the shaft. It will come off.

I would screw the nut back on until the top of the column is level with the top of the column (to prevent damage to column thread) and then hit it with an ordinary hammer while pulling the wheel up towards me.
You need the sharp crack of steel on steel, I doubt a mallet is going to do what you need.

Lube oil or spray and keep the nut half on unless you want a broken nose.

Penetrating fluid! I tend to put it on and leave it over night then wobble it at the 1230 position and then 0915 position several times. Problem from factory is they don't put anything on the splines to stop corrosion.
they prob hope it will corrode together and stop it comming of the same as column to rack splines
