Replacing engine mounts as old ones were shot. Working clutch end at the minute. Got new mount fixed to the cover but the engine will not slide down far enough for the holes to line up. Help as starting to loose it. Thanks

a good general rule for anything being bolted up, not just in the car

I would actually start by looking at the width of the new mount rubber.... I little while ago there seemed be to a type of mount that wouldn't fit without elongating holes.... sorry no idea of brand and where purchased, but had a set that gave me all sorts of trouble so i checked measurements of subframe/ hole positions etc and then tried fitting just on a bare subframe....... went to the parts bin found another set...... normal fitting ( on both bare subframe and in engine bay.... just normal bits of figeting as suggested above. These mounts were normal ones not captive nut or anything fancy

Yes normal fitting. Have got a screw driver through one of the holes so getting there. think a two man job so going to wait till week end.

If you remove the top long bolt on the Radiator / Engine Mount Bracket and loosen the lower one, it should all 'fold up' just enough to get the bolts in the mounts to the subframe on both sides. Once they are in, jack up the engine under the radiator side and slip the top long bolt back in.
Done loads like these.

I always weld 5/16" UNF nuts onto the mounts and open the holes in the sub-frame to 3/8" diameter. then I use large washers under the bolt heads.
Also, make sure that you put a bit of grease onto the face of the mounts to help with the small movements needed to align the holes.
You need to use 3/4" long x 5/16" UNF bolts.

All sorted thank you. Easier as a two man job.
