All components in the cooling system are in great shape but I would like to see the temperature run a little cooler in hot weather so I am considering installation of an oil cooler to help with controlling water temp.

How much reduction of water temp could I expect to see?  I've been told that one isn't needed on a street car as it would cause oil/water temps to be too low but I had one in my '67 Cooper S back in the '70's and don't recall any temp issues at all even when climbing mountain passes.

First what temp is your oil at?

oil that is too cool causes more ware than oil that is a little too hot.

cooling the oil will have little effect on the engine temp.

If you do fit one please also fit a thermostat so that it only cools the oil when it is too hot.

A cooler thermostat will do the job. As Nicklouse says you do not wnat to cool the oil too much and it will have little effect on overall engine temp anyway.
