I’m doing a full nut and bolt (“back to metal?”) rebuild on my ‘98 JDM and although I can paint it any colour I fancy, I’d actually like to keep it original and boring red/white as it came out of the factory.

Because it’s a JDM originality and providence are less relevant, to me anyway, so this rebuild is going to be the Mini I want, my way, tastefully altered but not a Mk1 lookylikey. It’s definitely keeping the air-con and fuel injection!

So colour choice … which red do I go for and of course which white to go with it? It’s currently its original Flame Red (COF) but in my mind it doesn’t stand out in the way I’d like it to. I’m loathed to have it painted in a non-BMC/Rover colour but something more Ferrari Rosso Corsa would in my mind be better. I painted a Mini in Tartan red in the early ‘80s and although I loved it then, it’s maybe slightly darker than I want. It also needs to be a solid non-metallic colour.

So what will mimic Ferrari red …
Tartan?
Flame?
Solar?
Something else?

The roof was originally Diamond White II (NAL) although I’m sure it’s already been repainted in a slightly creamier white, maybe Old English White (NDB or NNX). I’d likely repeat that again.

Any thoughts?

Stu.

Thank you for the link. I've looked at that site previously although it appeared down when I originally posted from my phone!

Unfortunately the information is a little patchy, leaving me to compare a Flame Red swatch with a Solar Red car photo!

If the car wasn't modified, it would be a shame not to do it in the original colours. It will have better value if you want to sell it.

Ultimately my car will have low key and (hopefully) tasteful adjustments, RH tank, wheel arch extensions removed, etc, anything else will be bolt-on/off so not permanent. The original paint code is RCQ which is a two colour combination of COF (Flame Red) and NAL (Diamond White II), I'm keen to keep the red/white combination but I'm bending to the idea of doing it CMU Solar Red / NNX Old English White.

There's always Targa Red which was used on Mayfairs in the mid-80s. Mine was this colour - not as "bright" as Flame but still a pleasant and deep red. Paint code is CNE from what I recall.

(Note that the roof was the "popular in the early 2000s" Flip Paint. Changed from red to gold to green to blue. Expensive!)

Stick to "Tartan Red", it looks nostalgic.

If you like Ferrari Red, go buy a Ferrari.
