New Engine, Mot

Hi everyone, my Mini is nearing completion, and I feel I need a little advice it’s been off the road 6 years which is how long I have owned it. First registered Oct 82 it will have undergone a complete restoration including the installation of a completely rebuilt A+ 1275 with a +0.020” rebore, full spec listed below. My issue is I need to get it through an MOT, basically looking for a suitable needle for the carb that will give me a good chance of passing first time. The camshaft has been run in; the carb is currently fitted with a BDL needle and a K&N cone filter, I have also decided to revert to the standard air box with a K&N standard shape filter and ditch the cone, I don’t want the noise but welcome the slight increase in power I believe this option may deliver? Once through the MOT I plan on contacting AC Dodd to set it up properly for me if I can get enough interest locally. Any advice very much appreciated and welcome, many thanks for taking the time to read my post.

CR – 10.01:1

36/29mm inlet/exhaust valves

Swiftune SW05-7 camshaft

Hiff44 Carburettor (BDL needle fitted at present)

Standard air filter box using the standard shape K&N filter, the perimeter of the box has 5 holes (38mm O/D) drilled around it facing forward. (K&N cone filter fitted at present)

Aldon 100 AYP distributor with Ignitor (no vac at present though looking at having it fitted)

Non ballasted ignition

All breathers are vented back to the carb.

4 synchro close ratio box with 3.44:1 F/D

I would suggests finding a rolling Road to set it up.

One that knows a carb and not plug in black boxes..

Custom tune your car to what you wish.

if it was registered in '82 then you should be able to register it as a historic vehicle making it MOT (and tax) exempt

Needs a current MOT to be registered as historic

My issue is getting through an MOT with an engine that has not been run in, once it has an MOT registering it as a classic/tax exempt is a formality. The engine is from an 83 Metro.

The mot tester will not care what year it is just so long as it reaches the emissions for that year....

The car is tested on whatever is older, car or engine.... Your 82 car can be fitted with a 1994 spec engine and still pass under the 82 MY emissions restrictions.

If it's 40+ years old you simply present the MOT exemption declaration at the same time you apply for historic vehicle tax class to avoid the need to present an MOT certificate

 

as the following page states:

You can get the status changed at a Post Office afaik

Having done this recently for my car, and as your car is only just inside the scope of the Historic vehicle class rules, it's worth making sure before you go to the Post Office with your forms that you're familiar enough with the rules to explain them to the person at the Post Office who might not be.....

It can be a complicated process, well worth going to the nearest "big" post office, where hopefully someone will have done it before!
