so the main beam warning light that has worked perfectly for the last 21 months is playing up, Ive got a smiths central digatal speedo- and now the blue main beam warning light comes on as soon as you flick the switch to side, dipped or beam and doesnt alter no matter what the beam is actually doing.

It comes on and off fine if you just move the stalk for the flasher.

Anyone any ideas ?

My understanding of these units is that they are a self contained unit with probably no servicable parts and only a multiplug connector. Considering the fault you have, I presume the panel light and main beam lamp circuits are somehow connected intermally.

Firstly check to see if the panel lights come on when you operate the main beam flash part of the column switch. If this is the case then maybe the fault is internal to the speedo head.

You could try disconnecting the main beam warning light driver wire, blue/white, at the speedo head multiplug to see what happens. If the main beam warning light still comes on when the side light switch is operated then I would think the fault is internal to the speedo head, if it does not then the fault must be a "trick" path between the blue/white lamp  driver wire and the car side light circuit which could take a bit of work to pinpoint.

I hope this gives you some pointers to start fault finding.

It sounds like your combination switch is worn or cracked.

I think I'd start by investigating Spider's suggestion as it's easily accessible. It'll take a lot less current to  light the warning lamp than the headlights, so don't rule it out because it's just the blue telltale.

well - I was doing some spirited driving - checking my 0-60 time- well as spirited as you can in a 998... and the light corrected itself. Then it was faulty again ... so thinking loose wire -short  etc then remembered i'd replaced the bulb holder as one melted in the headlights- so on examination - some of the wire joins were not as well insulated as they could have been on the bullet connectors. So I have remedied this ,,, fingers crossed - not had problem since .

But as its a mini ..... watch this space
