Advice On Bonnet Painting

Best Answer bpirie1000 , 13 September 2023 - 07:43 AM

As above use wet and dry to smooth it all, down. Prior, preparation prevents piss poor quality.

Sand abandoned and then sand again.

Spray thin coats... then let dry in the heat. Then light sand and mzke sure it is dry and dust free.... wipe down with panel,wipe....then spray again.

Then water and wet and dry to take the top off smooth it down.. then thin laquer... make sure there is no dust about.

Just take your time. Do your best and enjoy it.. the rewards will speak for themself,

Hi all

So I picked up a replacement for my mini’s bonnet as the old one had rotted in the corners.
I prepped it, sanded it primered it and put on the first coats (used up a whole can of aerosol spray.
Not yet put a second coat on or lacquered it.
The problem is it looks really patchy, will this go away once more paint is applied and it lacquered?
Trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and get it painted at a body shop or finish it off myself (prefer to do this for the sense of achievement but want the results too!)
What are your thoughts?
Thanks
Paul

Yes, it’s needs a clear coat.
Does it need tubbing down more and then repainting? Or just a further coat of red and then clear coat?
Or scrap the idea of doing it myself and get it professionally painted?

I'd carry on trying myself before giving up, as long as you're not getting loads of runs and making a mess there's no harm in banging on a few more coats, trying to do nice long even sprays building it up nice and gradual and even

once you've got it on thick and it's dried solid you could try giving it a good mopping / wet n dry etc and then if you get a nice finish top coat it and see how you get on

whats the worst that can happen, you might have to strip it off again

disclaimer I'm not a paint expert so if anyone comes along with more professional sounding advice listen to them

I would say you need to get more paint on and perhaps try spraying in alternative directions (i.e if you have gone left to right on the bonnet do the next coat front to back and then alternate.

With painting the key is patience, then once you have enough base on that its all the right colour (assuming its not metallic which needs a drop coat) then laquer it with several coats letting it flash off between coats.

If you get enough laquer on it then even if the finish is poor you should be able to sand it down with some 1500 grit wet and dry and then polish it back up with compound.  Of course you need a reasonable thickness of laquer which is going to take a lot of coats from an aerosol.

Pretty warm - say about 26 degrees or so? Would that cause this effect?

Ok so more paint and then lots of laquer - I’ll keep going!

the heat may be a factor as the hotter it is the faster the solvents will evaporate from the paint, which will affect how well each new stroke of paint merges into the paint already on the panel

Don't sand the last coat of colour before clearcoating and clearcoat after about 30 minutes
Ideally use 2k clearcoat.....it has activator inside that mixes with the clear with a button under the can ....1k clear is garbage,it won't last

Don't sand between coats or between base and laquer, just get the thickness on and then flat and polish it to get the finish

Prior planning prevents piss poor performance!
