Hi all quick question just doing a spot repair round the front near the headlight.. I've applied primer to bare metal areas where it was bubbling, but I'm going a bit further to blend the paint in a bit better.. Do I need to sand down to metal and reprimer or can I 400 grit down to the existing primer finish with 600 then apply base coat??

I'm not a paint expert, but I have always rubbed down an area around the patch to be painted, to remove any car polish and to give the next coat something the grip on to.

It doesn't work 100%  of the time, some car polish gets further into the paint than one thinks, and the new paint forms into little balls.

There is a very expensive additive that overcomes this, but I cannot recall the name.

Once the primer has been flatted I then run over the paint around the area with a polishing mop with a course compound to provide a bit of key.

I then clean the whole area with panel wipe, tack it off and paint it.

Make sure you don't paint upto a hard edge unless its a panel edge/seam as its hard to blend in a straight line.  Its much better to say mask up the whole car except the wing and front panel, paint what you need to and then flat and mop afterwards to blend it all in.

Im trying to flat it down to primer with a block but it's a bit awkward in that area and it's gone to a bit of metal in a couple of small places... to be honest I've always primered but was hoping to get away without primering this and blending straight over... I've done the other side and took it to metal as there was rust/ bubbling so took it all back..

However if I apply base coat over this.. Will it show in daylight ?..

Basically, any time you break through a coat of paint to the substrate you should primer

In theory yes but it if its only a small area its normally ok, that said in the picture above if the large white patch at the bottom left next to the seam is filler than an area that size needs primer over it.
