Hi all. Just reinstalled my entire cooling system on 79 850. It was watertight previously. Now there is water seeping from a hole on the face of the block directly below the water pump. I've never even noticed this hole before. Clues please...

It looks like the leak is coming from above and tracking down the backplate and pooling there

The hole you're referring to is the end of an oil gallery which will have a plug in it

That’s nothing to do with water. It’s a cap for one of the oil galleries.

That's the joy of Minis they let you solve one problem only to create another. They just want to make sure you know them inside out and every nook and cranny.

I think they work on the reverse of "Measure twice cut once".

If the pump and hoses are not new, some corrosion can occur between them. When that's disturbed, without giving them both a good cleaning, they don't always re-seal and you can end up with small leak(s).

It's new hoses throughout, so hopefully there shouldn't be a problem there. Im suspecting the drain hole on the underside of the water pump is acting up having been "disturbed" perhaps. Also, its all new gaskets and everything is nice and tight.

That tends to be on the top of the pump.

Yes not "drain" hole but on the underside of the water pump. Earlier pumps had it on top, I believe.

So, it transpires the water was seeping out from between the block snd the bottom of the water pump. A tiny chip in the water pump facing seemed to be enough to cause it. Replacing it with a large impeller model. Might as well improve it if I have to replace it...
