Hi all,

I've a 2000 MPi which has just failed it's MOT (yay...). I've found one cable on the large black ECU connector is snapped about half an inch from the connector body, the other side is visible in the wiring loom. It's the cable that drives the radiator fan relay...

Given how short the remaining cable is ECU side, how can I remove the end from the ECU connector to add a new, longer cable?

Cheers!

personally I'd probably have a go at baring the end a little and soldering on a new length, then heatshrinking it, you'd probably only need a small piece showing, it'll only be signal voltage not a supply I imagine

but there are those that get all upset at the idea of soldering in cars because it's more brittle (never had a problem myself)

if soldering, remove plug so heat doesn't do damage to ECU

you can de-pin connectors though the issue might be reusing the existing pin successfully, or finding a replacement pin the right size?

It appears these may be the connectors as the same plug was used on Defenders. You would need to verify that:

Pretty sure it is an AMP connector, so other would have the parts as well

In the US, it looks like you can get them in the correct color as well

One problem with soldering is people tend to use a too small iron.Large power iron gives lots of heat quickly and reduces the tendency to melt insulation and solder tracking.Just my experience,Steve..

I've got a decent iron that I use for model making so I'll give it a go rather than trying to replace the whole ECU connector - especially given the retest within 10 days deadline.

They look like the right thing, the back of the existing cables have little round green plugs holding them in. For now I'll solder and look at replacing it longer term. I could do with replacing some of the relay holders as well if I can find those. 23 years of junk and corrosion will not be helping.
