2000 Cooper Sport

Drove the mini to work today and ended up with a 2 1/2 hour journey home due to bad traffic, whilst stuck in traffic I turned on the heater to take some heat off the engine. After a while I noticed red dust/grit that had come out of the windscreen vents laying on the top of the dash rail. Anybody have an idea what this could be?

It's a Mini!

My guess would be ferrous oxide.

Magnet to see if it's iron oxide, or could be foam dust if you have a bulkhead liner behind the dash.

Definitely no magnetic particles. Brushed some on to a piece of paper for a better look. The other photo is definitely old rusty rust! This came from the plastic vent pipe as it exits the fan box that goes up the the screen. I assume this has got there possibly when there has been work done and it fell down the windscreen vents.

That's rust. Check behind the dash up near the screen vents. Also check your fresh air pipe down the drivers side to see if anything is in there too (it's foam lined inside)

Maybe it's been through the Aussie Outback ?  That dust never leaves the car.

.
I was going to say just that. However, years ago I had a bonnet fly open at 100ks. All the dust came out immediately, couldn't see for 10 minutes. ;-)
