Gear Lever Retainer - Remote Change

Hoping someone could assist. I have a remote change box and the shifter in there had a chrome plate in lieu of the original retainer (no. 27 in below link). I've replaced it with a short shifter and fabricated some 6mm steel plate for something a bit stiffer. I'm now unsure how much I should tighten the plate down / compress the spring (no. 26 in below link). As it's just a plate and not a cup like the original I can keep going! I tightened down to the point the spacer (no. 25 in below link) had no movement and went about one more turn...

As the original fixings were tightened by a flathead screwdriver you cold never get them too tight.

 

coarse thread into alloy. Easy to pull threads.
