Hi all. Just acquired a lightly modded 1992 Mayfair. Metro 1275 engine and plenty of running gear mods. However over the last couple of weeks it's developed an intermittent starting problem, which is now getting more frequent.
Battery is fine. Power is present at starter and all ancillaries checked with voltmeter. However when turning the ignition key, ignition light flickers once but effectively does not illuminate and whilst ignition is on the battery charge is still fine at the battery but there is no voltage present at the starter or any ancillary. Also ignition on or off can't get any lights, flashers etc to work.
Really stumped as to what is at fault.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

This might be worth a try.

First, disconnect the battery terminals, (safety)

Take photos as you remove the starter (only 2 bolts and one nut)

Still taking photos, remove the cover / band from the non gear end of the starter and examine the carbon brushes.

There were some poor quality carbons which leave a lot of 'dust' which shouldn't be there, clogging things.

Using photos, with fingers crossed, reassemble.

I've had a similar problem in the past which turned out to be a faulty ignition switch?

^ made me think that as well, easy enough to check if you've already got the meter out. locate the most accurate wiring diagram for your car and follow the voltage until you find where it stops

Check the wires at the starter are connected. These feed the power to the fuse box. Seen these corrode and snap with the winter weather and age..

the battery runs direct to pre. engaged starter terminals so if no voltage here what are you using as negative point? test from positive on starter straight to battery negative terminal with a test lamp if ok you may have corroded or loose battery negative connections. common areas bulkhead to engine and battery to boot floor.
