Have you run up your engine before installing? You can start it out of the car and make sure there are no horrid leaks or strange noises.

For your guide here is the set up to bench start the engine. (Moop is the name of my daughter's Mini).
For fuel I used an empty washing up liquid bottle with the bottom cut off that a length of plastic fuel pipe fitted onto it's nozzle perfectly, then to the fuel pump.
Had engine on Black and Decker Workmate bench but also had the engine hooked up to the engine crane/hoist as a precaution. Had temp fuel supply tapped to the crane arm.
Crane also helped support the exhaust pipe.
Starting Moop’s engine on the bench.
Earth engine to –side of battery
Connect wire to +side of Coil and to +side battery
Black lead on side of Distributer connect to the negative side of the Coil
Connect lead from Big terminal on the Solenoid to +side of battery
Small red lead from large spade terminal on the solenoid to touch +side of battery to start

Paint the inside of the subframe and lower part of the engine bay, white. It makes it so much easier to see 'down there'.
