Hi,

My gear lever/selector has suddenly crazy. Instead of being a tight box with no play and only movement is to select, 1, 2, 3, 4 or reverse. It now moves massively to the left or right. On removal of the gaiter, I can see that the lever going into the 'ball' is able to move in a complete circle, hence the massive amounts of movement.

Whats the likely reason for this - will something have come lose that was restricting the movement previously?

Thanks

Locating pin will have pushed out of the hosing. There are two pins that hold the cup down. One is longer and locates in the slot in the gearstick ball. Push it back in. You will have to do a more serious fix with the assy out of the car. Normally a bolt with a nose ground on it.

If you're describing the lever itself rotating then it's as nicklouse said above.

However, if it's a rod change box and you're basically stirring a pudding, it could be the roll pin has fallen out of the gearbox coupling under the car.

Thanks - is this pin accessible from on top, or do I have to get under the car?
Also, can you run through the 'more serious fix' in any more detail?

You should be able to access the Pin from inside te Car, by lifting the gaiter.

You can fit a hose clamp around the gearshifter retaining cap to keep the pin in place.

one of the best rebuilds you can make is the gear lever housing. There are two brass bushings and 3 rubber bushings to replace.

Inside the housing you will find a lot of grime and dirt, clean it and grease it up.

Those bushings cost 10bucks and transforms the shifter in a super nice experience to drive.
