I will start this thread off by stating that this is for use on a kitcar so not the standard mini engine bay. The issue I am going to face is that I currently have a 998 fitted and it is a really tight squeeze to fit the standard air box in the space. Over the winter I am going to fit a 1275 which I am aware is taller meaning zero chance of the standard air filter box fitting. I really don't want to go to a cone filter or the like as I need it to remain half way civilised as I will be doing a lot of miles, so what is the slimmest air box out there that will fit a HIF carb? TIA

I'm not aware of a slimmer filter box.  Could you fabricate an intake tube to allow you to relocated the filter completely?

How about a plenum & a remote filter?

All filter cases tend to be as tall as the carb dashpot I reckon.

That could be an option maybe Graeme, and now that you mention it I think I have seen these for sale somewhere previously?

You can make an airbox how you like, here's the one I've been using for the last 7 years: https://www.theminif...rbox/?hl=airbox

That is very true also, although it is something I don't have any access to or experience with.

you could print it but considering other materials available and time taken and strength, resistance to heat, I would say cutting and folding sheet metal of some kind would take a fraction of the time and be a lot more resilient in a number of ways

the real time consuming part would be the design / mockup / measurement part, and that's the same either way

most home style 3d printers are quite small as well for that sort of thing, you'd need a reasonably large machine

having said that though I'm wondering if it might be worth considering the idea of finding a common car with a similar sized engine (fiesta / peugout etc) with a remote air box that you can re appropriate, run some tubing to suit, and that way you can simply buy a panel filter to suit which will fit perfectly and a good seal, easy to get replacements etc

either that or you've got to try and design and make something that fits a filter of a certain size really snugly which might be a bit of a faff

I have discovered a post on a Commer Van forum of all places where the guy used the neck of the HIF and was able to adapt a piece of drainpipe to fit over the neck and then ran a piece of ducting from this to a filter. Might have been a bit Heath Robinson but it appeared to have worked.

That fabbed airbox looks huge - which is a good thing. Does make me wonder if you could make one for a flat panel filter though, as found on a lot of modern stuff. It'd save finding extra space for a filter.

It should be well within the capabilities of a modest 3D printer to make a plenum as serviceable as a plaggy filter case. If you know any students, even secondary school ones it'd be worth asking.

I had considered electric project boxes, thought they wouldn't be deep enough, but the flat panel filter idea makes me wonder if you couldn't sandwich a filter between two.

Since proper scrappers are a rarity now, I find Ebay a decent research resource for this sort of botching repurposing.

There's a decent variety of cheap ducts for ventilation, tumble driers etc - see Screwfix

You'd really need something big enough to incorporate the communication ports to the piston chamber. There are alternatives to the filter elbow on Minis for inline motors with side mounted filters though https://www.ebay.co....:Bk9SR8DjvtXyYg
