Hey Guys, can someone help?

I’m currently restoring a 1989 Mini Mayfair. The shell has been repaired and painted is almost ready to go but the windscreen won’t go in!

my fitter has 27 years experience and has never seen a problem like this before.

the following has been tried……

>New screen

>New Rubber surround

>I have made a diagram with measurements and had Mini Spares technical compare with a new panel and my car’s opening is with 3mm of the new heritage panel.

During the restoration I fitted anew scuttle panel has the original was very corroded, the original bulkhead and dashboard top rail were retained, so I’m fairly confident it is in the right place.

Does any one have any thoughts

Thanks GL

Had the exact same with mine, also had the scuttle replaced. I did fit a new windscreen though as the old one was scratched from a wiper blade. Measured the old and new glass and the new one was even smaller so should fit easily, nope. Nevertheless, I had enormous trouble fitting it with the rubber from Minispares. Ended up buying a rubber from a different supplier which was a bit smaller in profile and while it was still a fight it did go in in the end.

My advice would be, order a rubber from a different source and try that as there are some differences between them. If you still have the old rubber, try and compare the profile of that with the new one and look for differences. Had that with the door glass rubber that was too thick and prevented windows from winding up.

If a different rubber doesn't work than try and try again is the simple advice. Also, fit the rubber to the car and then pry the window in it. I've done with those squegee type things you use for decals. You cab use enormous force with them without risking cracking the glass like with metal tools.

Rubbery Jubbery...

Deafo had issues with the later rubbers in the earlier cars...

Sure there was a post about an alternative supplier on here... somewhere...

Try holding the bare windscreen in the aperture to see what the fit is like.

Things to remember, the glass does not sit in the opening it sits proud of it. How much of the 27 years has been with Minis?

the other supplier is a reseller called Phoenix rubber.  They most likely buy from the same place as everyone else.

not had issues with the MiniSpares rubbers.

Good point @nicklouse, never thought that was the normal way it was supposed to sit. Makes a lot sense in hindsight and makes me think the Minispres rubber I still have laying around would have fit.

It is possible to fit the rubber inside out and then the glass will almost but not quite fit.Try turning the seal inside out and see what both ways compare.Steve..
