Anyone who has anything to say about the need for pinion support when it comes to a high torque engine?

My own thoughts is just that choice of a tall FD will at least reduce the bending force on the main shaft.

Be aware there are a few versions.

some don’t have a speedo out put.

some don’t allow a rear mount engine “steady” to be used.

not needed in most applications. which you don’t say.

I plan on fitting one when I build my box.
After seeing what a collapsed centre web bearing does to the internals it's not worth not having in my opinion especially if your going to be pushing it to the limit.
If the centre web bearing collapses or even just develops excessive play you can say goodbye to every gear in the box including the C/P.
Not sure who produces the best one though, I'm still gathering data.

I fitted the KAD one after breaking teeth on my crown wheel and pinion.
I went for the KAD version as it allows the standard speedo drive to be used and looks standard from the outside other than the cast in KAD logo.
Mines fitted in a remote box and required modifications to one web of the pinion support to clear the gear change linkage.
It also required modification to the main shaft (carried out by KAD) to sleeve the speedo drive end of the shaft to fit the 17mm id of the support bearing inner race.

And I went for the MED one. I think they have done a second or a revised one.

I fitted the Kad version to the swifty dog gears. It's a great box on the road and track. It handles plenty of mighty torque from the turbo with no issues to date 🤞

I run the KAD one in mine. I'm running around 180lbft though.

If you don't mind me asking, how does the crab claw and the selector rods fit in with the support in place?

I had to modify one of the webs on the KAD pinion support to clear the crab claw.
KAD now supply them ready modified for remote boxes.

Seems like a lot of people have gone for the KAD version. I guess it is advantageous to being able to use the speedo drive and a bearing inner diameter of 17 mm instead of 15 mm.

That depends on your gearset.

You are right. I have traced down the correct gears for my application. Not that I will bother to much about the speedo being fairly accurate but I need a working trip for the MOT. At the same time it is nice to have a working speedometer when the gauges are there.

That is decent figure! At which engine speed? (which will give power figure...)

I'd have to look at the graph, but roughly 5000rpm. It made around equal bhp so guess near 5250rpm.
