Ok - so took delivery of my new to me 1275 GT yesterday.  Having fun and having a good look around - loads of jobs to keep me busy.  I cleared out the boot to see what was included etc.

There is no spare wheel and the boot floor board was resting on a wooden block and what looks like a replacement fuel pump.  See photo.

Is there any reason for the pump being in this position/location?

Does anyone run a spare tyre now or just carry some foam?

I was going to pick up a cheap 10" wheel from eBay but won't fit unless I move the pump?

Thanks

The electric fuel pump on My GT is located on the subframe underneath the fuel tank, I would think that yours has been mounted in the boot to protect it from the elements.

I carry a spare on both of my Minis,

Thanks - I can move the pump.  What size spare do you carry and was there a standard jack etc as I am starting with an empty boot.  The car is running 10" ultralights - I could just get another of those but suspect they are a fair bit wider than a conventional spare?

When Minis were factory fitted with SU Electric fuel pumps they were mounted externally on a bracket down on the rear subframe.

All Minis came with a spare wheel (except Mini 1275GT with Denovo runflat wheels/tyres) and if a boot board was fitted it mounted on brackets.

BOOT BOARD BRACKETS FOR 7.5 GALLON TANK 165 TYRES:-

http://www.minispare...ic/CCC115C.aspx

CCC115 original 5.5 gallon tank to 1974 with 10" wheels upto 145 tyres
CCC115A for 165 tyres with 5.5 tank
CCC115B for 145 tyres and 7.5 tank
CCC115C for 165 tyres and 7.5 tank

http://www.minispare...sic/CCC115.aspx

A standard 10" steel wheel with 145 tyre would be fine as a 'spacesaver' spare wheel.

My GT has 12" ultralights with 165 tyres, my spare is a steel wheel with 165 tyre which just fits in. As mab01uk has suggested a standard steel with 145 tyre would suffice.

Just make sure the wheel will fit over your brakes.. some 10" wheels may not like your brakes...depending on what brakes.., obviously.... last thing you need at the road side is for the wheel not to fit.....

You wouldn't want to go far at all with odd size tyres up front. You could swap wheels about so an odd size spare only goes on the back. Better to have a set of 5, not all wheels use the same wheel nuts either.

I had a similar SU pump mounted sideways to the seat back. I think all GTs will have had mechanical pumps - possibly connected to an exhaust manifold swap?

The factory jack fitted in the socket in the sill in line with cross member. A scissor jack it probably more practical. I liked to pinch 'em off Metros in the scrappers, usually better quality than aftermarket offerings.

Take one of your wheels off try to fit it in the boot to answer your own questions  :P

Thanks Ethel - I have to agree - plus one of the ultralites seems to have suffered more than the others so would be a prime candidate for the spare and allow me to buy a new replacement.   I can then fit the same tyres all round too.  Just need to find a suitable place for the pump and source a jack!

If you mount the pump on the rear seat back all wil fit.
As to wheel size just remember cars these days use space savers so anything goes.

A lot don't have any spare ... just a can of puncture gunk and a small compressor.

The gunks fine if you just have a small puncture but not for more serious holes!

The electric pumps like to push the petrol rather than suck it, so mounting pumps low inside the rear sub-frame profile is best.

In terms of spare wheels, if you don't have a spare and can't seal the punctured tyre with 'black goo', you may have to leave your precious classic Mini somewhere not secure.

For a 1275GT, you will most have 7.5" 'S' brakes if running 10" already, so a standard Cooper 'S' 4.5" steel wheel would work fine. On one of my Coopers I have 5" x 10" wheels and a 4.5" x 10" Minilite as a spare. Just make sure that the wheel nuts are compatible.

Just to close out this thread - I moved the pump this week.  I also added a pre-filter and an inertia switch (in the boot).   Pump is now back in on the subframe.

Once the pump was removed I was able to fit a spare tyre in the boot and then fit out the boot space properly.

Really pleased with the outcome - now nice, tidy and useful.

Not sue if GTs ever had leccy pumps from the factory, but pretty sure yours won't have, going by the reverse lights. Likely added because of an aftermarket exhaust manifold encroaching on the mechanical pump.

If you decide to use a standard wheel/tire as a spare, insure that you have lug nuts to fit.  Many after market wheel lugs won't fit standard steel wheels.
