Looking for some advice as I took my mini out the garage for winter prep and drove it down the road and it came to a halt.
Gearstick stuck to right so removed it and all is well but at the gearbox end the selector shaft won't move left or right but will move forwards and backwards can I access the shaft with the diff removed?

It sounds likely to me that the particular Reverse Gear fitted in your Gearbox is one of those dreadful ones that has two small bushes in it. Those prior and later had one long bush. The issue with these that has the two smaller bushes is that the one under the smaller end of it, 'walks out' of the gear and when that happens, it won't let Reverse go back all the way when disengaged, or put another way, the Reverse Idler Gear is not back all the way in the Neutral position.

Another thing it could be, though, I really doubt it, is the Sleeve for the Selector Shaft Detent is missing. I say I doubt this as this would have shown up as an issue pretty much right away but it is one thing you can check with the engine in.

I can't think of anything else off hand that will do what you've described.

If it is as I initially suspect, it's an engine out and gearbox off to repair.

Look on the bright side. Summer has ended and may allow you to have a clean up under the bonnet for next year.

Just keep being methodical and rule out the simple easier things, work from there..

Good luck

It might also be the roll pin partly escaping and fouling on the casing, but if if's got no play at all it's likely as Spider says & stuck in a gear.

Taking the diff cover off will help confirm diagnosis by letting you get the interlock spool out the way, but the engine will have to come off to fix it.
