Well I was considering a seal unit LED conversion but don't want reporting to the police for blinding other drivers so will limit myself to just repalcement LED bulbs  .

But the question is.....

I have the W&P type front grill so 4 headlamp units.  I am going to have to rewire the inner 2 units anyway as looks like they were done many years since by Stevie Wonder when drunk.  I can also change the type of headlamp or bulb I replace with.

The current set up is outside pair for dipped beam and inside pair for main beam.  Now do I leave them as currently wired or start to play and use the all 4 for dipped beam lights or even have all 4 with both dipped beam and main beam lights.

Suspect I could give some 4x4s some lumen competition if I convert them all to main beam lights.  The car is 1980 so technically no MOT requirement :-).

What have others done and any pro or cons?  Probably won't get used much at night anyway but will certainly illuminate the garage  :D.

Cheers.

My twin headlamped Triumph 2500PI had the outer working on dip and main and the inners main only. They are effectively spot lamps. Probably the best way to wire up yours.

Thanks - I would agree.  Not sure why the main beam was removed from the outer units.  If you want main beam you want as much light as possible!?

Depending on car age replacing the bulb is possibly illegal, but replacing the lamp with a compliant full unit is ok.Were I not to be so cash strapped I would replace all my cars lights.Steve..

Could it be the main beam feed from the outer lamps has been used to feed the inners? Saves the complication of relays, etc when Stevie was doing his thing behind the grille? ;-)

Yes - you are probably spot on.  I need to unravel what was done - all the wires are the same colour and just hanging loose.  Good news is that I shouldn't need relays for the LED bulbs if I revert back and add the spots to the main beam circuit.  I removed the grill earlier to start looking at the wiring but then got distracted as one of the lamp retaining rings was broken and then noticed that most of the rivets in the actual grill had corroded and the light cowls were just loose so decided to repair that first.  The joys of Mini ownership :-).
