What does the starter do on the bench when you attach jump leads to it?

-ve o the body , +ve sparked on the terminal.. ?

Should kick over with the solenoid kcicking initially and return back Go to the full post

I can start the car no problem but when it starts the starter stays locked  in it is a brand new starter could I have connected it up wrong 

as I am not great with electrics many thanks for help  Ian Lilly

Could it be as simple as the ignition key getting stuck in the start position.

Recently had this problem with mine. Quick spray of wd 40 down the ignition barrel and all was sorted.

If not, sticking starter relay? Cheap to replace

Or the solenoid but start with the cheap options
