Hoping someone may be able to help me,
I have bought an SPI auto mini which the gearbox is knackered I was thinking of buying an mpi engine with a manual gearbox I know the usual things you need to do for the auto to manual conversion,
however I was wondering what would be required in regards to the wiring would I need the mpi loom or just the ecu or both thanks.

Not quite what you want to do but there may be some useful info in this link below.

Brian Gunn charts the process of fitting an MPi engine to his 1983 Mini.
"It wasn’t until I had collected the engine and a big box of other parts that I’d realised what a job I’d taken on. Everything was different, granted the engine would fit in the same hole as before, but just about every device connected to it differed from the car’s original spec, so it was daunting to think I’d have to fit everything and get the car going. What’s more, the MPi Mini was what most people consider a ‘new’ car at that time, so gleaning any information about how things work was always going to be a difficult task; I was limited to strictly one source of information – Rover."

You may also want to consider a MPI engine with a modern aftermarket fuel injection ECU, the MEMS2 ECU has limited diagnostics and configuration capabilities.

Why not look out for an SPi / manual-gearbox engine instead? The SPi is a good engine setup so for the work involved you won't gain a great deal, unless you really do need to lose the dizzy!

To be honest that's what I would prefer but found mpi engines seem to be easier to get hold of,
just wondered what other work would be involved if it was just the ecu and the usual auto to manual bits I thought it would be worth it

Not that it helps you but I say don't convert the auto engine to manual. Buy the engine and transmission that you want, if you think that is hard you are only making finding autos more difficult.

The most difficult thing about repairing the autos is the fact that most people think they are rubbish so threw them out. Now it is a bit difficult to find spare parts and good engines. They are not at all rubbish.

The last of the Japanese minis 97 on used MPi blocks with SPi injection.  They use a different ECU , a coil pack and a cam sensor as there is no place for the dizzy. I have no experience of this but the Jap engine loom may plug into your standard main loom.
