Is there any reason why I shouldn’t use WD-40 to lube the Advance mechanism on a distributor? just a little squirt through the hole in the plate should do it.

Would really depend on why you want/need to squirt wd-40 in there?

If you have water in there and require that dispensed then yes.

Wd-40 = water dispersant........

The thin oil would also effect the grease that would be on the distributor shaft which is there stopping it from seizing.

Short term no real issue but will not replace genuine maintenance.

It won't hurt, but as a lubricant, it won't last too long.

The usual way to lubricate the mechanical advance is to remove the rotor button and put a few drops of oil down the shaft. It's hollow and so does go all the way down to the mechanism - unless it's clogged up with old dried oil.

There are a few areas that need looking at. The bob weights pivots and the main pivot. The main pivot is under the rotor cap.

you really need to strip the dizzy to get the bob weights cleaned and lubed. Spraying WD40 won’t do much other than drip into the oil.
