I have run K and N for decades without a problem
Do some research on engine wear if you decide to run something else.
Don’t forget to drill the air box to improve airflow, too.
Keith Calver has covered these topics thoroughly.

You were probably already aware of these different style set ups, but i will wade in just in case.
There are Ramflo style airfilters
You would have to buy the Cage to start with , so your cost equation is probably looking dearer for an up front cost. Read up on offset to best fit in with your firewall
The filter foams are able to be washed and reoiled ...... debate over whether and what oil is appropriate also exists
Different foam manufacturers also .. and guess what ,,,debate over best exists...... I have been happy with Lynx filters and foam filters BUT
the foam ones do crumble after long heat exposure... and That would not be the best thing to ingest into your carbie ( if in doubt throw it out)
I think the relative cost of the paper air filters generally comes down to how well they are made - thickness of fins etc - if you are happy giving the mini premium oil , then i think it wise to not skimp on an airfilter

am I missing something obvious or are we talking about the filters that are like £7-8 from minispares

better still find one on ebay and get free postage as long as you're happy about quality of parts

how often do they even need replacing, what like 2-3 years depending on useage
at that rate youd have to change it about 6 or 7 times to get to the point where a reusable K+N one would have saved you money (20 years?) so cost isn't really the issue I don't think, I would be more interested in whether or not there was a noticeable performance difference between the two (negligible I would imagine on a day to day road car but happy to stand corrected)

Strikes me that it'd be more expensive rather than 'zero cost'?

Personally I would either go for a branded re-usable filter like K&N or stick with the paper elements. Both designs filter particles well. The K&N when set up properly (maybe with a needle change) will give a slight power increase, but in my opinion it would be slight especially if it is an element in standard filter housing. Steer clear of any unbranded 'performance' air filters from Ebay.if they don't filter properly they only increase engine wear not power

k&n aren't expensive for an airbox.
For an an airbox, k&n.
For ultimate performance, itg and med stubstack (again, washable) I clean and oil mine on every oil change.
