Does anyone have a picture of how it's meant to be arranged, I can't find anything with a search?

I can't see how to change the bobbins without removing the exhaust?

The gear selector housing fouls the exhaust. I can't remove the roll pin from the linkage as it fouls the gearbox housing. The only way I can see now is to take off the rear section of the exhaust. I'll leave the bobbins as they are for another day

..that doesn't look right
is that the exhaust pipe hard up against the right hand side of the remote housing ?
if so then i'd say that's a problem; the exhaust needs to be further over to the right (..and possibly a little lower..) to create some clearance
not the best picture, but hopefully gives an idea

Put it into reverse to remove the roll pin from the gearbox shaft by the way as it rotates the shaft to give enough clearance for the pin to come out
Back to your original issue.
If you undo the two bobbins inside the cabin, the selector housing "should" drop down far enough to enable you to remove the long bolt thus liberating the bracket (with the bobbins fitted) but then you can turn it in the tunnel to get it out past the exhaust.
I think there may be enough slop/slack/droop to not need to do anything with the front roll pin/steady bolt, if you undo the bobbins I think the selector housing may droop down enough to get the long bolt out , but if not, removing the roll pin and steady and pulling the whole assembly back and out is the way to go (don't forget to undo the reverse switch wires)
(Edit) It might help to remove the reverse light switch to get enough clearance for the housing to drop down further/far enough?

Also by the way - Nobody asked - why do you want to replace them? - are they broken? If they are then it may be tricky to hold them when undoing them inside the cabin
If they aren't broken, first question applies.

To answer the why, I was investigating an issue with a loose gearstick (missing bolt on the short shift housing) so I thought I'd replace the bobbins while I was there. Have decided that they are not worth the trouble (no visible damage) so have tightened everything back up and will leave it for now.
However, now it's all together it's clear that there's something not quite right as the gearstick is hard to the left of the tunnel (see photo above) rather than central. I think something's out of line somewhere

The main hole is slightly offset, but it’s as much as it can be. The holes for the bracket are pretty central, but the bracket is made to then push the selector box over to the left.
