I'm looking to change the bobbins on the selector box but the bracket seems very close to the exhaust and I can't seem to get at the bobbins without taking the exhaust off. I can loosen the pivot pin but the bracket can't swing down past the exhaust

Does anyone have a picture of how it's meant to be arranged, I can't find anything with a search?

I'm after a view from the underside of the housing and the exhaust pipe if possible. I know that the bracket for the bobbin is shaped to go around the exhaust but I'm not sure how close it's all meant to be?

I can't see how to change the bobbins without removing the exhaust?

It was a while ago and if my memory serves me you undo the 2 nuts in the cabin and the long bolt holding the bracket this allows you to push the bracket rearward and get it out and change the bobbins, once the bolts are undone you get quite a bit of wiggle room to work out a way to get it off. The exhaust is pretty close to the box and the reverse switch mine was quite easy. If your exhaust doesn’t rattle on the box it should be fine, you could possibly loosen the exhaust joints to manipulate the exhaust away from it a little? Oh and remove the gear lever off the box first

The long bolt (pivot) that holds the bracket can't be removed past the exhaust (maybe it's in the wrong way) so I'm trying to pull the bracket down but there's no room.

I'll see if I can get a picture later on today

Disconnect the steady rod from the gearbox and remove a roll pin from the the selector rod and it all should come out.

As Chris said earlier, take the gearstick out, undo the 2no nuts inside the car ( just behind the gear stick hole) the assembly will sag down allowing you access to the bobbins, you will probably need to disconnect the reverse light switch wire as well.As Haynes would say, assembly is the reverse.

I've given up.

The gear selector housing fouls the exhaust. I can't remove the roll pin from the linkage as it fouls the gearbox housing. The only way I can see now is to take off the rear section of the exhaust. I'll leave the bobbins as they are for another day

However, it's got me wondering if the gear stick is meant to be hard over to the left like this or should it be central?

..that doesn't look right

is that the exhaust pipe hard up against the right hand side of the remote housing ?

if so then i'd say that's a problem; the exhaust needs to be further over to the right (..and possibly a little lower..) to create some clearance

not the best picture, but hopefully gives an idea

It's tricky to get good photos as I've taken it off the stands now but hopefully these show the situation. It's pretty tight up against the exhaust, hopefully the photos explain better than I managed above

Put it into reverse to remove the roll pin from the gearbox shaft by the way as it rotates the shaft to give enough clearance for the pin to come out

Back to your original issue.

If you undo the two bobbins inside the cabin, the selector housing "should" drop down far enough to enable you to remove the long bolt thus liberating the bracket (with the bobbins fitted) but then you can turn it  in the tunnel to get it out past the exhaust.

I think there may be enough slop/slack/droop to not need to do anything with the front roll pin/steady bolt, if you undo the bobbins I think the selector housing may droop down enough to get the long bolt out , but if not, removing the roll pin and steady and pulling the whole assembly back and out is the way to go (don't forget to undo the reverse switch wires)

(Edit) It might help to remove the reverse light switch to get enough clearance for the housing to drop down further/far enough?

Also by the way - Nobody asked - why do you want to replace them? - are they broken? If they are then it may be tricky to hold them when undoing them inside the cabin

If they aren't broken, first question applies.

Thanks for the reply, it's really helpful to get my head around how things should be

To answer the why, I was investigating an issue with a loose gearstick (missing bolt on the short shift housing) so I thought I'd replace the bobbins while I was there. Have decided that they are not worth the trouble (no visible damage) so have tightened everything back up and will leave it for now.

However, now it's all together it's clear that there's something not quite right as the gearstick is hard to the left of the tunnel (see photo above) rather than central. I think something's out of line somewhere

It should be offset - needs to be to have room for the exhaust and reverse switch.

The main hole is slightly offset, but it’s as much as it can be. The holes for the bracket are pretty central, but the bracket is made to then push the selector box over to the left.
