Hi, I am puzzled by this - from memory because I haven't looked at one of these engines for a long time, the hole for the mechanical fuel pump has been blocked off, but it looks very smooth and like it was meant to be there, as opposed to someone fitting a blanking plate over it.

I believe the engine to be 850cc (engine number has rusted off looking at it as the pips that should hold it on have white powder in them so corrosion I would say rather than modified.

but even if I think "ok, the stud bust/rounded on the block so they fitted a electric fuel pump", the blanking off of it looks too neat to me...

anyone?

thanks

Engine blocks used with an electric fuel pump does not have an opening for the mechanical pump machined out.

I`ve had loads of engines like that and even more without the stud.

As above the early minis use an electric pump so the casting was not machined out.

If I remember correctly some had a long breather pipe on the tappet chest cover that ran down the back of the block and used the stud as a fixing point.

I guess it must have been changed on the production for line to a mechanical one on the later cars due to cost

The early 850 blocks, along with the (997 ?), 998 Cooper and all Cooper S blocks had that cast in and never machined as an open hole.

The stud is fitted there as a steady point for the open pipe crank case breather some of these engines were fitted with.
