I would like to get an HIF44 and refurb it.

There seem to be a few types. I saw a Metro turbo and some Montego ones. Can these be used on a Mini engine or perhaps converted for use on a Mini engine?

There are some that are RH and some are LH. Some have the mechanism for the auto choke. I think if you're in the UK you may as well just get a proper mini one to begin with

There are many different versions. And then there are the different springs/dampers and needles.

ant can be sorted to work on a mini but will need parts/fixings changed to work if not originally off a Mini.

These are the mini ones from what I can tell from my set

Throttle lever JZX 1605
Choke lever JZX 1609
Throttle cable SBB10099
Abutment plate CAM4942
Choke cable clip CZK6491

There’s also nice to have features like a plain throttle blade & the vacuum advance port on the right side of the throttle

There’s a few photos and details I added on the Australian mini forum (and I’m more than happy for any feedback)

if you're looking at complete units, which still have the aluminium ID tag attached, the Haynes SU curburettors book lists the following HIF44 specs :

Austin/MG/Vanden Plas Metro 1275 variants : FZX 1280, 1281, 1409, 1412, 1429, 1462

MG Metro 85 on : FZX 1469

For Turbo installs : Austin & MG Metro Turbo   : FZX 1411, 1435

IIRC AC Dodd sells them, might need an exchange though?

Thanks KTS, Do these numbers appear on the carb's aluminium tag?

The tag look like it goes in one of the dashpot screws like this one on eBay. I’m sure most of them have gone missing over the years

Montego had auto-choke so not going to easy to convert for Mini use.

The auto-choke is massive and is only half of the system without the ECU. They are are identical to the cable type underneath though.

They had other goodies/unnecessary complexity to try & close the gap with the fuel injected competition, like an electronic overrun fuel cut valve.

Would an FZX 1252 be ok?

I think it was originally fitted to the Jaguar XJ6.

According to this list 1252 is a HIF7 which is 1 7/8” with the earlier style dashpot

Would an FZX 1435 be ok with the correct needle in non-turbo applications?

Would i be right in thinking the difference is a tougher float that could resist collapsing under boost pressure?
