Hi y'all.

I'm getting ready for my MOT and found the hazard lights work fine from the switch on the dashboard.  Unfortunately the stalk on the steering column does not operate the indicators in either direction.

Before I start looking at diagrams and all that kind of thing... does anybody know if this is a common issue?  The headlamp function on the same stalk are all fine.

I've just replaced the relay.  The hazard lights didn't work until the relay was changed.

Check fuses

I have... but if it were fuses the indicators would not illuminate at all.  They work with the hazard switch and also with the alarm fob.

The hazard and alarm circuits are on separate fuses

Most obvious is the indicator relay. Think it's under the bonnet, left of the master cylinders.

yeah, I was curious so began looking at wiring diagrams and there is a separate relay for the stalk v.s. the hazard switch.  Circuits I've seen before use the same relay for everything.

I cleaned the outside casings of the yellow relays yesterday so maybe I didn't put it back in properly.  Coincidently the hazard lights failed at the same time and were a problem on the last MOT so the two problems have come up together.

There's no hazard relay.

Your car has one flasher unit for both indicators and hazards. The relay is switched by an ignition live so the indicators only work when the ignition's on (engine running).

The hazard switch could be faulty,I believe it disconnects the indicators when the hazards are on and reconnects them when the hazards are off.I am unfamiliar with your model but my earlier car works this way,Steve..

So how do the hazards work if the ignition is off?

the hazard switch is supplied with a permanent live for the 'hazards on' position

and when you switch to 'off' it passes the switched live through to the indicator stalk, which is only live when the ignition is on

hence why sonscar is pointing out it could still be the switch at fault, even when it's off it's involved in the indicator circuit and a dodgy terminal or loose connection would stop them working

I solved the issue, it was a problem with the yellow relay under the bonnet.  As it's a little dark under the bonnet of a MINI I didn't notice that I'd missed the holes completely when attempting to put the relay back in place after cleaning it.  Hence the hazards were working, indicator stalk was not.

Hazard switches are sort of 2 switches in one. When it's off it can connect the indicators which are turned off when the hazards are turned on. That was necessary when there were 2, different, flasher units.

SPI indicators were wired through the hazard switch, even though they had a shared electronic flasher unit. I'm not sure about MPIs, but there's no need to do it.
