Hi all,

Just a quick question, while the Moop's carburettor is being refurbished and I am replacing the heater hoses. I thought I might to a compression test so can any of you knowledgeable folks recommend a reasonably priced compression tester.

There are a lot of different ones and they seem to range from £15 up to £200, which is a bit toppish for me as it will not be used that often.

Not interested in an unbranded one.

my Gunson one works well enough - i've had it for a good few years and it's still working well.  can't vouch for what their current products are like though

Any. Get a screw in type though the push to seal are crap and a pain to use.

dont worry about what they actually say as long as they read about the same.

Agreed with above had mine years and really useful it unless I am properly stuck.

Is there a reason you want to check compression?

Or just because.....(nowt wrong with that)

I have a gunsons. Plenty on an auction site starting with E.......pick one up reasonably cheap.

Or could borrow one for all the use you need..

Hi folks,

Thank you for your replies.

I thought that while everything was disconnected I would take the chance to check the compression. Not getting any indications that it could be out but belt and braces action.

I will look for a Gunsons on fleabay.

Thank you nicklouse re screw in type. I had seen that info on here before so was only going to get that type.

Seems sensible as I don't see how you can do the procedure with the other type when doing it on your own. Head in engine bay holding sensor in position and hand turning the ignition not feasible me thinks.

Cheers

Paddy

It is possible to activate the starter on most minis with an engine bay starter solenoid. A wire to give 12v to the trigger should kick it over

Or on some early separate starter solenoids they have a press button

But yes a screw in comp tester is much easier to use by yourself

You can get a clip on remote starter to help when you are alone. This is also useful in demonstrating how easy minis are to start once the bonnet is open.Steve..

Screw in type.
A foot switch to operate the starter is a must. Thus leaving both hands free to work with. And dont forget to reconnect the solenoid coil wire when done, a good trick for young players.
