Hi Team,

Long time away, but I'm back in the mini game and fizzing for it.

I rebuilt a motor about six years ago for mine and my mum's mini. The gearbox I used is terrible and I'm committing to rebuilding one to throw under the still fresh motor.

I've just picked up a box to rebuild, I believe it's out of a mole as it's come with the Hardy Spicer output shafts.

Could I please have some advice, are the HS worth putting on the new gearbox in place of the (fresh) rubber joints in the car currently?

If they're the "tap off" type, can I use the current diff side covers and output shafts, and only need to get two pot joints to convert to that?

Apologies if this is an over covered topic. I found lots of HS topics covering how to remove them etc or recommending them for high power builds. Nothing about putting them on a medium spice 998 with 12G940 big valve head.

I’d definitely choose Hardy Spicer joints over rubber. They are stronger and much less likely to fail

Aftermarket 'knock off' h/s flanges use standard mini side plates.
BMC / leyland knock off or bolt on hs flanges use cooper s size side plates.

The Steel Unijoint parts I'm seeing these days are all getting very tired, there's many parts that aren't available new for them, so it's picking the best from a less than ideal bunch. If you are going to stick with them, just be sure all the parts you have for that set up are in good order. The few new parts that are made from that set up are obscene in price I feel.

If you are considering going away from that set up, Pot Joints are a very good option. It does also mean a change of drive shaft as well as all the diff parts, but is likely to end up much cheaper than resurrecting steel uni joints.

Personally on a 998 I’d convert to pot joints and flog the HS stuff - that would bring some cash in to your rebuild.
You would potentially need two new output covers, but if the HS joints are knockoff then the diff outputs should be OK.

I used to weld and machine a flange on the diff output shafts, and convert to Hardy Spicer, but when pot joints came along, I wouldn't give you 2d for Hardy Spicer.
