Its a rebuilt engine and box only done around 1200 miles but I guess I'm going to have to get the engine out again to get it sorted.

But before I do, I believe one possibility is that the detent plunger can get stuck? I've taken the nut and spring off but how do you get the detent plunger out or free it up?

It will go forward into neutral but not across the gate. It has been getting stuck along but lots of wiggling and eventually it would come up but this time no such luck.

I've taken the remote change housing off and still cant get anymore movement but dont know if it is possible to change gear by hand.

First thing is to check the linkages are tight on the top of the diff housing.

One thing comes to mind but all engine out.

Check to see if the Interlock was refitted. This can be seen once the engine comes off the gearbox on the left. but you can check before you get to that point by removing the speedo end cover. Without the interlock, the shift shaft for 3/4 could have moved enough to prevent the toggle clearing the gates. It's also pretty dangerous without it.

I now have the box out and everything is working fine!  I've fitted the remote housing so i cna use the gear stick but cant reproduce the fault.  My first action was to use a long screwdriver on the reverse selector fork and it slipped staight out of reverse.

The interlock tab is there.

However something is obviously not right, causing the occassional awkward to get out of reverse then getting completley stuck in reverse.  And i need to find it before it all goes back together and in the car!

It must be something that has some slight movement in it, which makes me wonder if its in the linkages or remote.  Or are there any other areas within the box that can cause it?

Check every bolted connection. And the presence of the cup that the end of the gearstick goes into in the remote.

This may help or it may not, I recently built a remote change box and came across a couple of things that could cause your problems, the 1st was the central oil pick up pipe, this needed tweeking ie bending slightly as from the factory the reverse gear caught on the mesh filter end and I also had to relieve the casing so everything cleared. The 2nd was the bearing retainer bolts, from the factory there seemed to be 2no different lengths ( why I have no idea) if you fit a longer one in the wrong place it pushes the reverse selector rod slightly out of alignment, just a couple of things to check.
