Original coil on my YKG2S2, marked 05-67 has finally given in. This is a 1275 cooper S. What is considered the best replacement for this model?

There were some issues with 12 volt coils a few years ago. In particular, the Lucas ones sometimes failed quite early on, even the so-called 'sports' coils.

I recall speaking with Peter Baldwin about it and he said it was all a bit 'hit or miss'.

I had a Lucas one fail and went to my local auto parts supplier and asked what 12 volt coils they had in stock. They sold me a Delphi 12 volt standard coil and it was fine on my 1275 Cooper 'S'. I still have it fitted to that car. My other 1275 Cooper has a Lucas Sports Coil, but bought more recently and it seems to be OK.

Go find a 4 cylinder points ignition car wreck and take the coil. That's your best chance. It seems nobody can manufacture a good coil now. The coil should be around 3 ohms just in case someone has fitted the wrong coil to a wreck.

You’ll need a 3 ohm coil, which is sometimes called a 12v coil

I bought one in 2016 from Tony at AEOW in QLD and it’s been reliable and no problems. He’s an auto electrician who specialises in minis so he’s worth a call

I've not yet tried one, but I believe the Pertronix coils are excellent quality.

Viper dry coils are excellent, I know AC Dodd recommends and uses them day in day out with hardly any failures
