 Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a 1979 Clubman Estate. It has the VIN plate and commission plate on the bonnet slam panel, but I notice that the welded in plate on the right of the slam panel is a sightly different serial code to the commission plate. Is this normal?

If it has a log book and been recently taxed, don't look into a possible hornet's nest.

Thank you DeadSquare. Yes, the vehicle does have a valid V5 (vin plate matches too) and it has been recently taxed at the historic rate.

Both codes show W20 (Clubman Estate) just the following 6 digits are different. Perhaps the front end has been replaced over the last 45 years.

Welded plates are nothing to do with the id of the vehicle.

Good to know, it all looks original but after so long, anything that was repaired/replaced could end up looking as old as the original car. You've put my mind at rest.

There is lots of useful info on Minimail about the various ID Plates used on Minis:-
