Hi all i had my 1996 M.o.t on my sprite and got told by tester its not original engine which should be mpi version.ive only had this since last November and i have lots of paperwork but nothing about engine swap.its a single carb version.the only numbers i can find and read are below.the tester said to get emmisions correct to engine he needs to know what year engine is.
It should have cat but doesnt also.these are numbers i can make out if correct.12A2860324482/. WFM1024NW/. 12034OB. Had many issues if you see my other posts but nearly there.thanks for help

Ok the engine number is the 12A2860324482 but you have not read it correctly some of the numbers are letters.

but taking an educated guess it should be a 38HIF carb and should have an open loop cat.

Assuming 12A2BG03 as the code, Guessworks also says it's an A+1275 with HIF38 and open loop cat.

MPi engined Minis were never badged Sprite, so your MOT tester is incorrect. If it hasn’t got an airbag, it’s not an MPi Mini.
Rover stopped making the Sprite sometime in 1996, hence from the middle of that year, it did change to MPi, but they were badged either Mini (with those pepper pot wheels) or Mini Cooper, with or without Sportpack.
From vague memory there were Sprites still produced with carb engines in 1994-5, even though the SPi was in production, I think the Mini 35 was carb, could be wrong?
However by 1996, I believe it would be SPi, could be wrong?
Someone else will be along with accurate info!

Here’s one on eBay with an SPi engine, you can see the ECU on the left.

Hi all i read the numbers as best I could a bit worn out.it definitely has no cat as per tester suggestion.
I suppose i just need to know if correct engine.reg states its a 1996 sprite .
Only going by what tester said.
I haven’t had mini for that long . This is the engine number on the log book but i dont think it matches anything on engine 12A2DJ01327519
Maybe i should ask previous owner if it was changed and get info that way.

Or are there any previous MoT certs recording it?

It should be pretty obvious if it was originally an MPI with all the other differences apart from the engine: electrics, airbag & SRS...

If the tester's as amenable as he sounds, could he not look at the emissions you're getting & judge if the engine matches the years they applied?

I have most MOT certs but none state engine change and none have engine number.it seems quite strange that it had passed all other mot since production.I think i might just have to ask previous owner.

Have you checked the car is legit, did you do a HPI check?

Presume the VIN plate matches the V5C, but have you checked the hidden stamped in VIN number, hidden in the drip rail, it is located here, where the green line is:

Original engine was 12A2DJ01327519 = Correct for a 1996 Mini Sprite (SPI with Cat & 9.4-1 CR).

If others have interpreted the number correctly (& I have no doubt that they are correct)....

Replacement engine = 1275 A+, Single Carb with Cat fitted, 9.4-1CR & 3.105 final drive

engine manufactured between May 1992 & July 1994   (SPI came out in August 1994).
