Having wired the RV1/1003/00 tach according to wiring diagram for -ve earth, the needle
immediately shoots to the right hand end of the scale. This tach was originally fitted to my
car when it was +ve earth. Is that the problem?

The RVI type tacho normally doesn't work with electronic points
All you need to know about RVI and RVC Smiths tachos is here:

I had the same happen with a 0-8,000, swapping tach from a +ve to -ve, as per an Autosport article, and assumed the tach was dud; I tried a 0-10,000 from the race car, which was about ten years older, and it worked.
Weird.
