I will be painting the spokes of a set of Revo wheels.  Rather than masking tape, I thought I might apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the polished rims to prevent overspray.  Will this work?

Edit:  Didn't consider that getting a nice sharp edge would be difficult - masking tape it is.

That is not a good idea as you risk getting contaminates on the area you want to apply paint to and it would cause paint issues. Proper painter masking tape is the way forward. Also getting a hard defined edge would be a problem,

I've used electrical insulation tape in the past as it enables you to follow curves much more nicely than masking tape.

In some cases the old paper gasket trick works well, I.e cover a piece with tape overlapping the edges then gently tap with the small hammer around the edges to get a perfect fitting edge

Not really for wheels as such but have used a lot for parts like track rod arms or brake calipers where there's a bit that needs to stay bare
