I am looking for a route for my door wiring loom - it is currently out the driver's door and into the wheel arch area.  I need to run to the fuse box and also to the other door (and some under the dash).  No issue drilling more holes but I see that there are already a couple of large grommets (circled in the photo) - a bit further away than ideal but useable.

 

What are these grommets actually for and do they service a purpose?

The early 1275GT's did not have the holes or grommets (see magazine road test photo above) and is a sign of an early bodyshell.

I think they appeared around 1973.

Not sure what they were added for unless it was something that helped with a process on the production line....

I was told that it's to do with reducing the strength of the body to meet safety requirements. I think I recall it being a 1972 change here, if not then it was 73.

My 72 van doesn't have them but both my 74s do of course.

My late 71 clubman estate had them. Inner wing panels were still the factory originals.
