MAINSHAFT !!!

Yes.
In fact you'd always remove it first even if you wanted to remove the mainshaft (1st and 3rd motion shafts)

that's good news. `But despite having a Haynes Manual I can't see how to remove it. I'm missing something.
There is a slot across the outer end of the shaft. Does that unscrew?

No, it doesn't unscrew
You need to remove the drive pinion that meshes with the diff crown wheel. (which will be tight - you will need to lock the 'box into 1st and 4th gears and also find a way of holding it down whilst you heave on the nut)
Then the bearing retainer behind that, which will release a small triangular plate that locks into the layshaft and the reverse idler shaft
The the layshaft should withdraw towards the input gear end of the 'box
(I've never attempted it, as I'm usually stripping the 'box down anyway, but you might be able to remove the bearing retainer without taking off the pinion).
There's loads of videos on Youtube if you can't follow the Haynes instructions.

Problem found. In the gearbox I've found 3 small pieces of a flat magnet which could have the shape of a keyway. These pieces were causing a jam.
Should there be a magnetic keyway somewhere or has someone dropped one in it?

None of the keyways are intentionally magnetic - the only magnet is in the sump plug (or a second plug where the pick-up pipes bolts to the back of the casing if its been fitted with an 'upgrade' there).
