New engine has an inertia starter.
I have purchased a solenoid. The existing loom is shown in the photo. Can anyone please give advice on which wire goes where? Many thanks.

I borrowed this from an earlier post when I converted my car. I don't take any credit for the pic.
On my car I removed the plate for the spade terminals as I didn't need the horn or voltage regulator feed.

This is my car. The top connector has the feed from the battery plus the brown cables. The red cable feeds an aux fuse box so ignore that on mine.
The bottom cable goes to the starter motor.
The left terminal is the yellow and white cable and the right should be the brown and red. I had to lengthen mine with just brown cable as it was too short.
I STRONGLY suggest you wire this up with the battery disconnected and check everything with a multimeter before you connect the battery as the battery feed is not fused so it will short if it's wired wrong.

I should ask what year car is the wiring loom from as it will help.

Is that engine installed? It'll confirm that it was originally a pre-engaged starter (going by the battery cable terminal).

 

The two setups aren't that different, but you will have to find a mounting point for your new solenoid. That will also mean making a choice about what to do with that battery cable. Simplest will likely be to find somewhere in reach of all the existing  wiring, possibly a bracket on the transfer case.

 

Can't quite make out all the bits of loom, but it looks like they aren't all solenoid connections.

 

Do you know what your ignition is... points, ballasted?

The pre-engaged setup is probably better - if you have the original lump you could just use its clutch, if suitable - or have the ring gear swapped over to the new clutch.

It is ballasted, but I will by pass that as using a 65D. The engine I have fitted came with pre verto/inertia set up. I tried to simplify the photo by showing all spare wires on the cardboard.

Sorry, me again. Hopefully you can see on the photos that I have a yellow and white wire joined to the brown and red. I presume I don't use the yellow and white as I am not running ballast. Any advice on the black and white wire?? Many thanks.

You can see i have now fitted the solenoid with main feed and two sets of brown wires to one post and lead to starter from the other.

On my car the brown/red wire is the start signal wire from the start relay. This is fitted to the bottom terminal in your first picture I think.
On my car the white/yellow goes from the top terminal in your pic to the + side of the coil. I run ballast ignition with a 59d so I don't know if your will be the same as I also use the pink/white ballast ignition wire to the coil.
On my car the white/black wire goes from the - side of the coil to the distributor but again as your running a 65d it may be different.
