at 2K scale, i would assume that's indicating 539 Ohms

Hey mate, that'd most like be 539 ohms.
With either type of HT lead, that doesn't sound great.
Can I suggest checking the meter by shorting the leads of it together and see what reading you get.

Hi Chris, I checked the multi meter by touching the two leads together and got the beep and 000 on the display. 539 ohms is too low for a spark plug wire about 15” long? I’m getting my decimal point/scale setting mixed up because I thought that reading would be 5,390 ohms.Hey mate, that'd most like be 539 ohms.

Cheers Jerry.
Your Meter sounds like it's working properly.
If you have copper core HT leads I would expect to see less than 2 ohms when testing this way, though if suppressor caps are fitted, this would be much higher, of the order around 2,000 to 5,000 ohms.
If you have suppressor type leads, for one that's 15" long, I would expect to see 4,000 to 10,000 ohms. Generally, these type of leads are around 12,000 to 16,000 ohms per yard.

That's still more than women claim when they say they can multi task. OUCH something just hit me.
