I am rapidly running out of patience with my 1997 MPI.

Car coughed and spluttered to a stop. Fortunately I was not too far from where I keep the Mini and got a tow back.

Car is cranking.
Fuel Pump is whirring away (how can I be sure the injectors are actually delivering fuel?).
I am getting a spark.

As the timing is calculated by the ECU, I assumed it was receiving an erroneous signal from either the Crank or Cam Sensor, so both replaced with new.

I have tried fitting a replacement ECU, same symptoms exist.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I think it will be something silly that I have overlooked. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

It is likely to be next weekend before I can have another look at the car, so please be patient.

The ECU has to be paired to the car. It's not a straight substitute replacement.

If it's fuelling, that should be detectable from a plug/smell from the exhaust.

Does the fuel pump whirr constantly, or pump to pressure and then stop?

I know that it's a basic question, but does it have fuel in the tank?

As an old flying instructor used to tell me, "Only trust a fuel gauge when it says 'Empty' "

Sorry should have clarified, both ECU'S have had the immobiliser function disabled.

Due to a previous (undiagnosed) problem with the Fuel Pump, I have wired the pump to run continuously.

Yes, there is fuel in the tank.

Bypassed immobilizer, bypassed fuel pump control, think you may as well fit a carb and dizzy.  .

Looking at the bigger picture I would consider checking out the relay pack and the loom.

use similar basics to carb cars. are plugs wet? as you state you are getting a spark you can stick a timing light on to check spark timing. you say you have wired pump to run continuously please tell me you have fitted an inertia switch inline with the pump supply?

In reply to the last two comments:

Believe me I have considered swapping to carbs and distributor, I have also looked at Hyabusa and Honda engine swaps, even electrification.

Yes, there is an inertia switch fitted to the fuel pump feed.

I have swapped out the Relay Pack for a known good one, I am going through the loom circuit by circuit and, as said in my original post, I am convinced it is a simple fault and the solution is staring me in the face. It is just finding that bloody fault!

A diagnostic check would be good here. Not too expensive to purchase the necessary kit either

What diagnostic kit would you recommend? Do you have a link!

I would suggest you look at either of these tools. You will need to make or purchase a cable.

This one just added MEMS2J functions

MEMS2J-supporting release 7.89 now complete and available on my website:
https://andrewrevill.../MEMS3Tools.zip

And this one:

https://rovermems.com/

Realize that either of them will give you information that will still need to be interpreted.

Be a redneck, ignore the EFI.Pick a lead and use a strobe and see if it flashes on cranking.Pick a lead on the opposite side of the coil and repeat. If you have reliable flashing then squirt some fuel into the motor and crank it.Starts briefly?fuel problem.Google Noid testers for injectors and see if the injectors are commanded to pulse. You should check fuel pressure at the fuel rail.Elimination be testing sure kicks hell out of guessing.Steve..

Check the wiring loom behind the throttle body, the wires going to the MAP sensor. Mine were broke about 20cms away from the plug because of the engine movement and the car wouldn't start.
