Help! - Pre Verto Clutch Issue

Best Answer KenM , 15 July 2024 - 02:37 PM

Think I have the issue identified, not exactly as described by the responses but set me in the right direction, many thanks to those that provided advice, I believe it to be the ball on the end of the actuating arm has been severly bent backwards, probably at some point when the clutch has been pressed too hard against an incorrectly adjusted throw out nut!  Next thing is finding the right wheel nuts, sSeparate 'thread/plea for help' posted on that topic, thanks again - Ken

Hoping someone can help me here as I am at a loss.

I am trying to finish off a mini built by my son who since emigrated to Australia and left the mini.  The problem is that there seems to be something fundamentally wrong with the pre verto clutch set up and I will try and explain.

When the actuating lever is pulled (as if being pushed by the slave cylinder push rod) there is too much travel before the release bearing engages with the diaphragm/pressure plate resulting in about a 20mm gap between the actuating lever and the end of the clutch cover adjusting bolt/lock nut and also the pushrod comes completely out of the slave cylinder.  The diaphragm is marked Borg and Beck and the release bearing is what I understand to be the newer type and is marked 7 / W5 / 8

It's as if the release bearing is not deep enough to take up the gap bewtween the plunger seat and the bearing face of the diaphragm, or the plunger not long enough.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Best regards - Ken

Ball on end of lever worn or failed.

or the diaphragm is incorrectly made see other post or the thrust plate missing or fitted the wrong way.

pictures might help.

Worn ball on end of leaver was the problem I had after fitting a new clutch on a 69 I had some years ago (still alive somewhere as SORN UHU 402H - if someone on this forum has it). Would not go into gear - added weld to ball and all good - long road of trying other things before realising this was the problem.

As well as the ball on the arm, you'll also likely find the hole in the plunger that the ball goes in to well worn, the solution here is a new plunger.
