I'm going to Brands tomorrow and I any time I go near the motorway I have a little check to make sure nothing is falling off. I've noticed there is a tiny bit of play in the steering the last week or so driving to work.
I've just had a look and the outer column is knocking slightly against the inner column just as it comes through the floor. I've adjusted the column drop bracket and slid the outer column lower towards the clamp amd then nipped it back up. Is there supposed to be a bush in there to stop that movement.
I also tightened up the steering rack u bolts a quarter turn each but I'm conscious of not over doing those.

I've just looked up my invoices and I put in a plastic bottom bush. How much slop should there be

What year? As Nick says there is a felt bush on some years, which there is on my Mk 1, replacing it removed my column movement.

With the plastic bush - none, however up to about 20 thou (1/2 mm) might be acceptable.

Yes I didn't think there should any. I'm not so sure the pinch bolt is the correct 1 either. Looks a bit longer than standard. Might be worth buying a couple of bits at Brands tomorrow and sorting that out.

You should have an upper plastic bush and a oil soaked felt bush on an 1980 pick up.
