Ok started car up yesterday, pulled off temp sensor connector and the fan starts up, reconnect and the fan stays on. Turn engine off and fan stops. Quite a lot of bubbling in the header tank water rose up to the neck then as it cooled went back to halfway.

So took car for a 8 mile run to get a paper this morning, got home, no fan came on and on turning the engine off it boiled over through the pressure cap.

Only thing I can think of now is to fit a new stat, temp sensor and cable.  Otherwise I'm stuck!!

Any thoughts please?

Sounds like a pressure or a leaking header tank, both not uncommon issues. Pressure test the system and, if buying a new cap, get a BMW (blue seal) cap.

Many of the cheap ones on EBay are not fit for purpose.

Thank you all, cap is new as is the header.  new stat, temp sensor and cable on order from mini spares york.  Took everything apart this affy in readiness and took oil filler cap off slight emulsification going on. EEEK

Strongly suspect now it could be head gasket maybe or worse, got a compression tester coming however will fit new parts and lsee how things progress.
