Can anyone please tell me exactly what type of alloy wheels were factory fitted to 1983 Mini Mayfairs (front and rear drum brakes with no integral spacers and no arch extensions)?

My owner's handbook says that they were 5J x 10 with 165/70-10 tyres.

However, I tried fitting JBW Minilite 5J x 12 (ET 31) wheels with Falcon 165/60-R12 tyres and discovered that the rears stick too far inboard by about 14mm.

I have established that post October 1984 models were fitted with rear drums with integral 1" spacers and arch extensions but I don't really want to add spacers or extensions if I can avoid them.

Are there any other options?

I fitted 10” JBW Dunlop D1 replicas to my mini- 1982 Mayfair with the same brake configuration. Managed to run without arch extensions although the tyres did very slightly protrude past the rear arch’s (165 yoko A008)

These were the optional 5 x 10" Alloy wheel fitted to the Mini Mayfair with drum brakes all round (before 12" wheels and disc brakes became standard in October 1984) but are often also fitted with the plastic 'Mini Special' wheel arch extensions.

As fitted to Mayfair Sport, Mini Special and many other 'limited' editions in the 80s. Pictured with correct wheelnut covers and centrecap. Some have part. n° GAW 113.

I fitted 10” JBW Dunlop D1 replicas /quote] Very interesting, thank you. Did you have to fit any rear spacers? If not, do you know how close the tyres are to the radius arms? By my calculations, with an ET of 25 mm, the inside of your tyres would 8.3mm further inboard that the originals.

Thank you. Very ihelpful. I note that the photograph shows that the wheels were fitted with 155 tyres, which makes me wonder whether they were ever fitted with 165s.

Fitted very thin spacers to the rear as the radius arm and shock were very close. Front was ok

I now see that the Exacton wheels are ET 14, which would explain why they fit.

Thanks. That confirms my findings. I think that I am going have to fit 19mm spacers to the rear, if I want to use the ET 31 wheels. I would have preferred to fit the newer rear drums with the built in 1” spacers but these would stick the 165 tyres out too far, unless I fit arch extensions. Alternatively, I am going to have to sell the ET 31 rims and find some with ET 14 offsets.

Any reason to go from 10 to 12 inch? 4.75x10 Rose petals would meet your "no arch" requirement I think (but still need a small spacer I believe)

I think there is a general consensus that minis run better on 10's notwithstanding aesthetic considerations.

(My personal is that round nose looks best with 10's Clubman fronted and Mokes can take bigger)

I think, with hindsight, that you are right and that 4.75 x 10 Rose Petals with 165/ 70 R10 tyres would have been a better option. Unfortunately, I had mistakenly thought that 5J x 12 rims with 165/60 R12 tyres would be little different (at least in diameter) from 5J x 10 rims fitted with 165/70 R10 tyres, as specified in the owner's manual. I hadn't appreciated that there was so much variation in ET offsets and that 165 tyres could fit on either 4.75 or 5J rims.
