Hi everyone. Usual mini problem of a not so accurate fuel guage. Stuck a camera into the tank and the first image shows that even though the guage is on red, we still seem to have a fair bit of juice remaining. It's right across the middle of sender it seems, so does anyone know roughly how much is in there? Moved the camera around and took the second image, hence the title. What is it

Fuel injection or carb tank? On my sender it had an o-ring over the floats, I think to stop the plastic float rubbing the bottom of the tank when it's empty. I fitted a eBay sender last year and it lasted about 6 months till the floats filled with petrol and it showed empty all the time. Buy a mini spares one.

Cheers Isto. It's a carb set up. So when I fit the new one should I try fish these out? Any thoughts on how much fuel is in there, at that level?

Hi

I fitted a Minispares one, cannot remember how long ago. A few years.

Recently emptied out the tank to replace all the fuel line rubber tubing and low and behold the above mentioned O ring came floating out of the tank.

It looks as if there two in there.

Paddy

Thanks Paddy. It looks like mine has had multiple new fuel sender's then, each one losing an o ring?

I just used a 20 litre can and sucked all the fuel out of mine, to be fair mine is a daily and I know once I brim the tank I can get 3 days commute before my tank is in the red. As long as the fuel level is below the sender you can change it without any problems just be mindful as you do it.
You can fish the o-rings out but I don't think they will cause any harm if you can't get them. Either way whatever you do make sure it's ideally outside when you play with fuel, safety safety safety.

Thanks Isto, all taken on board. Just struggling to find the correct sender. I don't know if mine needs the early injection one (1993 Rio). I ve been told the 93 Rio was meant to be an injection model but a surplus of carburettor parts etc lead to a last minute swerve of spec to use them up. Apparently that was a common thing to happen to get rid of stock.

If it's got an injection tank it will have 3 fuel pipes coming out of the top of the tank. If it has a normal carb tank it will just have the outlet pipe and the breather.

There is a code on the sender. xnb10007. When searching for this I get a straight arm with a small bend near where it hinges. When I stick the camera into my tank it's a more prominent bend like a dog leg, and this is more towards the float. Similar images on line have this as the injection one. Can either be used?

The bend on the injection one is to avoid the fuel pump. Id buy the carb one if your unsure as it's cheaper and if you remove your old one to find it's an injection version you can just bend the new one to match the original. People have done this before without any issues.

If you bend one though doesn't that alter the length of it, and in turn alter the ratio it lifts to send the signal to the guage?

This is what I'm seeing in my tank. Bear in mind though, this isn't working either😂Attached File  instasize_240922162214.jpg   47.31K   4 downloads

With that bend it is an injection sender.

May have been changed already. There's a small white sticker that seems to be for quality control purposes. It states, 'passed 1998'. The car is a 1993. They could have been going through the same confusion I am and chose the injection version. I may ring Minispares tomorrow, see if anyone knows for sure.

Rang Minispares and they confirmed I have the injection sender in my tank, but it isn't a problem as either can be used on the carb version.

Before ordering one I thought I'd test the one I have. Ran the petrol down and removed it from the tank. Reconnected the wires and put it through its motions. When it reads empty on the guage, and when it's against the lower stop tab, there is still enough juice in the tank to be just below the sender aperture. When I moved it to the 'full' tab it reads 3/4 on the dial. So working but not very helpful. I put 2 very slight bends in the arm. One to allow the float to dip lower into the tank before the stop, and another to allow the arm to rotate more before it hits the full tab. When all put together the lower reading on the guage was now about 15 - 20% fuel remaining, instead of the previous empty. Nipped to the petrol shop and filled up with the missus watching the guage with the key turned. Stopped when full. Checked with cameras and it's just touching the neck. Only thing remaining now is to run it to red and hopefully not run out🥴👍
