My 1990 Cooper had an HIF44 as standard and it still has it. I have done a bit of work to the carb and manifold to improve flow.

Is that an RSP Cooper or did yours fall in the few months between the reintroduction of the Cooper and the introduction of the SPi model?

Mine is not an RSP and was first registered in Jan 1991, so it was built in 1990. It's now a historic rally car and I am tempted to fit twin HS4`s to improve throttle response and maybe gain a few bhp plus possibly improved torque.

I once had a Cooper 'S' rally car onto which I fitted a pair of HS6`s with a 649 cam and it went quite well once set-up on the rollers.

Because of the higher gas flow and longer inlet tract which gives the fuel more chance to atomise, it would be interesting to compare the torque curves between twin carbs and a single.

The reason I fitted the twin HS6's was because I was doing the Pirelli Marathon and it went up some high passes. I was told that with the larger carbs in the thin air of the alpine passes it would be able to get more air in. It seemed to work well, so I guess that was right. It was giving around 95 flywheel bhp on a rolling road at the now long-gone AutoTechnique in Luton.

Interesting, but off topic, that Mini was auctioned a few months ago and it is now fitted with twin HS2's (UXD725G if anyone is interested).
