It's such a long time since I did this, so could someone remind me whether it's possible to remove the old front rubber cone springs and fit new ones without removing the top arms.

I have usually changed them when doing complete restoration of front sub-frame when everything is removed.

Thanks.

Yes, just remove the rebound buffer to give the extra clearance and providing you can get the alloy cone off the rubber doughnut in-situ and remove it you`re away.

While you have it apart, run a file round the top of the cone, so that it fits easily inside the doughnut.

As you are reassembling, lap a turn or maybe two, of PTFE tape, round the cone and then a smear of Copaslip.

Your son will bless you when he changes the ball joints.

As others have said, it is possible with the arm in position, but for the sake of a bit time to take the arms off its better than swearing and generally getting the hump trying to separate the cone from the trumpet in situ, unless the gods are with you and they pop apart that is. Apparently I'm godless.

I'm doing my rally 1964 'S' which has had the same cones since I built it in 1994. At that time, Hi-Lo's were not allowed on Group 2 rally cars, but they are now, so as I'm going to drive on another rally, for the first time in many years, I decided to fit new cones and Hi-Lo's all round.

Yes, I think I'll take the top arms off and check the bearings whilst I'm at it.

Today I removed the rear cones and struts ready for the new adjustable ones. With twin tanks I'm glad I built it with rectangular access holes in the rear seat back panel. I got both dampers undone in 10 minutes and the entire suspension removed in 45 minutes.

Lots more re-prep work to do as well.

Thanks for the advice,

I've always removed the arms. You need to force them out with a lever and it distorts the tower without removing the arm.
