Gearbox Rebuild... Diff Bush Clearances?

I'm finishing off a gearbox rebuild and have come to the diff part. What's the best way to check the clearances on the diff output cover bushes? I don't have an 'internal' micrometer (is that what they're called?), I do have the squash strips, totally forgotten their name too, for checking tolerances but as the shaft will be pushed through and not cinched down onto them I don't think these will work. Is it a case of if there's any waggling at the end, they need replacing? This doesn't feel specific enough... Any ideas, and gearbox tips I might have missed, are very welcome! Thank you 🙏

The plastiguages (squash strips) won't work.

You ideally need to measure them with a bore micrometer or guage. Even the cheaper option of telescopic bore guages can be used if you know what you're doing and have the patience and knack. Although they only measure 2 points so don't measure ovalality.

Ideally they should have 0.001" clearance.

Something to watch out for if you are replacing the inner pot joints, is to see if your new ones actually fit in the side plates, there has been a batch of joints which are oversize, this causes a world of pain if you aren't aware.

While not the most ideal, you can check the clearances with a feeler gauge.

Do definitely need to get into the habit of checking every new and old part, I've just had to send back a brand new layshaft and diff pin coincidentally from minisport too that were incorrectly machined - diff pin was too big, layshaft notch for the lock plate was too small

seems to be like this for quite sometime and issues from lots of other suppliers so not a jab at minisport as have had many good parts over the years and will go to them now.

Credit to them, they've taken them back when I ordered 2 years ago!!! Think it's just the world of parts now, I have the same issue with parts for my defender too
